Malaria in South Africa

The health department for Limpopo province in the far north of South Africa has reported a recent increase in the number of malaria cases. The worst affected areas are Phalaborwa and Giyani. In the past three days, more than 233 cases have been reported and 62 malaria cases have required admission to hospital for treatment. No deaths have been reported as yet, however, two of the cases in hospital are in a serious condition.

Advice for Travellers

The risk of malaria in Limpopo province is well recognised and malaria prophylaxis is recommended. Travellers to this area should be aware of the risk, avoid mosquito bites and take antimalarial medication as prescribed. Any fever should be reported immediately for assessment.
