Enterovirus Outbreak in Spain (Catalonia) (Update)

20 Sep 2016

The Catalonia Department of HealthLink has confirmed a baby girl died of enterovirus with acute neurological involvement on 12 September 2016.

The Catalonian Secretary of Public health confirmed there has been 110 cases of enterovirus with acute neurological involvement between 7 April to 30 August 2016. Most cases where concentrated between mid-April and June 2016 and in the last two months there have been only five. Consequently the outbreak of enterovirus is now deemed to be closed.

Enterovirus infections are primarily transmitted by faecal-oral and respiratory routes; spread from person to person when an infected individual coughs and/or sneezes, or touches and contaminates surfaces.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should reduce risk of enterovirus infection by strengthening basic hygiene measures:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after changing nappies.
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid kissing, hugging, and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are unwell.
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and door handles, especially if someone is unwell.
