Malaria in Northern Cyprus

19 Sep 2017

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) Link reports 3 cases of malaria in UK tourists who had been staying in a tourist resort at Ayios Amvrosios (Esentepe), Kyrenia in Northern Cyprus in August. They were diagnosed on their return to the UK in the first week of September.

This is the first time malaria is known to have been transmitted on the island of Cyprus since 1967.

Advice for Travellers

Cyprus remains a country where transmission of malaria is very rare and the risk of a traveller being infected is very low. Antimalarial medication is not needed. However, avoidance of mosquito bites is strongly recommended as the first line of defence against malaria and other mosquito-borne infections.
