Cholera in Philippines

21 Jun 2012

The Department of Health has declared an outbreak of cholera in Catanduanes province as cholera cases have increased from the beginning of the year (2012). As of 13 June 2012, a total of 1370 cases and 8 cholera related deaths have been recorded. The worst affected area is the town of Virac with 748 cases and 6 deaths reported.

Health officials blame the practice of drinking water from contaminated rivers as one cause of ongoing transmission of cholera.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
