Cholera in Philippines

The Department of Health has reported an increasing number of cholera cases in the Bicol Region of the Philippines. In the first half of 2012, 3158 cases and 30 cholera associated deaths were recorded. This compares with 445 cholera cases and 4 deaths during the same time period of 2011.

The worst affected province is Catanduanes with 1832 cases, follwed by Camarines Sur 811 cases, Sorsogon 291 cases, Albay 168 cases, Camarines Norte 54 cases and Masbate 3.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is a low risk for most travellers. Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population and cannot ensure safe drinking water can be immunised against cholera. A high standard of food, water and personal hygiene should also be maintained.
