Yellow Fever in Sudan (Update)

06 Nov 2012

The Ministry of Health for Sudan has reported to the media that the outbreak of yellow fever in Central and South Darfur in the west of the country is spreading to other areas.

As of 4 November 2012, a total of 143 cases and 63 deaths have been recorded. The Ministry confirmed the emergence of new cases among the population in the southern regions west of El-Geneina in West Darfur and the adjacent areas in Central Darfur.

The Minister of Health of the Darfur Regional Authority, confirmed the increase of yellow fever cases and its spread from Central Darfur to the east and west; a medical team of doctors and specialists is scheduled to arrive in the affected areas on Sunday.

Advice for Travellers

There is a risk of yellow fever in areas south of the Sahara Desert and vaccination is advised for travellers to these parts (unless contraindicated). Darfur is a large region in the west of Sudan, most of which lies south of the Sahara Desert. Travellers should also take steps to avoid mosquito bites.
