Rabies (Human) in India

19 Jun 2013

In the last month, six fatal, human cases of rabies infection were reported in Manipur state in the northeast of India. Three  cases occurred in Phumlou Siphai, two in Achanbigei and one each in Kongba and Ahallup.

At present there is no official policy on animal rabies in Manipur; there are an estimated 182 000 dogs in the state. In an attempt to control canine rabies an immunisation campaign has been implemented and the state department has administered rabies vaccine to 80 000 dogs. The department is planning future vaccination programmes by procuring a further 30 000 doses of vaccine.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers should be aware that India is a high risk destination for rabies and are advised to avoid all animal contact. Rabies pre-exposure vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk. All animal bites should be reported promptly for medical assessment.
