Chikungunya Virus in Dominican Republic

The media has reported that chikungunya virus infection has been confirmed in the Dominican Republic.

The Public Health Minister announced that specimens taken from suspected cases have been laboratory confirmed as chikungunya virus by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States. The confirmed cases have been identified in San Cristobal on the south coast, however, steps to contain the outbreak have been implemented nationally.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
