Yellow Fever in Angola (Update)

The major outbreak of yellow fever in Angola is continuing. As of 30 March 2016, 1409 suspected cases have been reported nationally in Angola, including 198 deaths. Of these cases, 483 have been laboratory-confirmed. New cases continue to be reported in Luanda, the worst affected province with 906 cases, 344 confirmed and 141 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health. The number of cases from other provinces is also reported to be increasing.

International spread of the disease has already been documented, and cases have been exported to China, Kenya, DR Congo and Mauritania.

Advice for Travellers

Yellow fever infection can easily be prevented by vaccination. Vaccination is advised for all travellers to Angola (unless contraindicated) and proof of vaccination is required for all travellers over 9 months of age entering Angola. The vaccine should be administered at least 10 days before travelling.
