Hepatitis A in Australia
16 November 2009
An ongoing outbreak of hepatitis A has been reported from the state of Victoria in southern Australia.
Since the beginning of 2009, 200 cases of hepatitis A have been recorded; this compares with 74 cases for the same time period in 2008. Preliminary results of a study of recent cases, supports a strong association between the infection and the consumption of semi-dried tomatoes.
Advice for Travellers
Travellers visiting Victoria should be aware of the outbreak and follow local advice. The Health Authorities have renewed their advice that individuals who buy loose semi-dried tomatoes should not eat them unless they are thoroughly cooked.
