Cholera in Papua New Guinea

A cholera outbreak which began in Papua New Guinea five months ago is ongoing.

There have been almost 1900 cases and 40 deaths reported in total. New cases are still occurring in the affected provinces of East Sepik, Morobe and Madang but the outbreak is spreading to new areas including the first reported case in the capital, Port Moresby.

Advice for travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population can be vaccinated against cholera if unable to ensure that drinking water is safe.
