Japanese encephalitis and other (update) in India
30 August 2010
The large outbreak of Japanese encephalitis (JE) in the state of Uttar Pradesh is ongoing.
There are also cases of acute encephalitis syndrome occurring in the area simultaneously. At least 215 deaths have occurred and a total of 1 324 individuals have been treated in hospital since the outbreak began in July 2010. An immunisation campaign intended to contain the outbreak has just been completed and 34 million children in the state's 34 districts have been immunised.
This report does not distinguish between confirmed cases of JE and acute encephalitis syndrome which is caused by an enterovirus rather than a mosquito-borne virus.
Advice for travellers
Japanese encephalitis vaccine is available for those considered to be at risk. Avoidance of mosquito bites by 'covering up', using insect repellent and impregnated bed nets is essential. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/ houses is advised for longer-term stays.
