Cholera in Nigeria (update)

The cholera epidemic in the north of the country is spreading.

A total of 11 states are now affected and cases have been reported from the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja and Osun State in the south west of the country.
Since the outbreak first began in Adamawa State in June 2010, a total of 6 497 suspected cases and 352 deaths have been recorded throughout the 11 affected states.
The worst affected state is Bauchi with 1 725 cases, followed by Gombe with 1 188 cases and Borno with 1 090 cases.

Advice for travellers

Travellers to outbreak areas who will be mixing closely with the local population can be vaccinated against cholera if unable to ensure that drinking water is safe.
