Malaria in the USA: Maryland

On 18 August 2023, health authorities in Maryland reported a case of malaria in a person in the Washington, DC area who had not travelled to an area where the disease is usually present.

Advice for Travellers

Malaria is a potentially serious infection transmitted to humans by mosquito bites. It is not usually transmitted in Maryland or anywhere else in the USA. The risk is very low at this time.
