Rabies (Canine) in Indonesia (Bali) (Update)

Canine rabies is an ongoing problem in Bali, Indonesia. The Animal Health Service has recorded a total of 36 confirmed cases of rabies in dogs in Bali between January and May 2014. The highest number of case (14) were recorded in April, followed by May (6). Cases were reported from the following areas of Bali: Buleleng (11), Jembrana (10), Gianyar 5, Klungkung (4), Tabanan (3), Karangasem (2) and Bangli (1).

No confirmed cases of canine rabies were recorded for Denpasar and Badung in the south of the Island where most tourist resorts are located during the same time period.

Rabies has been ongoing in Bali since the 1st case was reported in November 2008, in the village of Pecatu, Badung, South Bali.

Advice for Travellers

The rabies situation has improved in Bali but travellers should be aware of the ongoing risk and avoid animal contact and report any bites. Pre-exposure vaccination should be considered for those at increased risk.
